The Near Earth Space Initiative
The Near Earth Space activities in Turkey since 1960 constitute mainly the sporadic research activities. However, the recent participation in national and international projects has been contributing towards a more systematic research activity with more definite objectives since 1990.
The atmospheric processes are highly non-linear and time varying. During the COST 238 and COST 251, European Union Actions, it has become obvious that the Space Weather related atmospheric data are very important to have. However, it is almost impossible to collect data systematically. For example, during high magnetic activity there are important data gaps. We, as a smaller group in Turkey, have demonstrated that the data driven approach such as Neural Network (NN) based models are very promising both in modeling the Space Weather effects on the ionospheric parameters and in filling the data gaps of missing data.
Starting with the COST 238 Action, as Turkish Group, we chose to develop models and conduct some small experiments to obtain some local data. With this systematic approach, we have been active in addition to the COST 238, in the COST 271, COST 296 and COST 724 actions.
